El Rastro, La Latina and Lavapiés on foot

This is the Madrid people mean when they say they want to see the real one. Almost everything you will want to visit is within walking distance, and what is not is one metro stop away.

It is one of the few parts of the historic centre that is still a proper neighbourhood: old-school markets, bars packed at two in the afternoon, and sloping streets that fill with people on Sunday mornings.
